What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp is the count of seconds since the Unix Epoch - 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. It's the same number everywhere on Earth, which makes it handy for logs, APIs, and sorting events across machines.

On 19 Jan 2038, signed 32-bit clocks overflow. Prefer 64-bit timestamps (or milliseconds as 64-bit integers) so your systems keep ticking past that date.
